The Forte family have been making gelato for three generations, and it all started in 1926 when our grandfather Alfonso Forte arrived in Swanage having left his home in the Italian municipality of Casalattico. He went on to open the first Forte’s Ice Creamery on Swanage seafront and ran the business alongside his four sons.
Today, thanks to our grandfather’s hard work and dedication, our family have been making gelato in Swanage for over 90 years. Our product has proved extremely popular over the decades, and continues to be today.
All our gelato and sorbets are freshly handmade on the premises of our gelateria in Swanage. We strive to create a truly unique and authentic artisan product by combining our exclusive family recipes and using only the finest ingredients available.
We are proud of our Italian heritage and to be continuing our small family run business after so many years. We believe that the quality of our product and customer service is reflective of this personal touch.

Gelato is not simply the Italian name for ice cream.
Although it feels very smooth, gelato is made using more milk than cream, and so is much lower in fat than traditional ice cream. There is also less air in gelato, which means it packs more flavour.
